The Printers’ Charitable Corporation (PCC) rebrands as The Printing Charity
Date Posted: 24 Mar 2010

The Printers’ Charitable Corporation, the leading national charity for the UK printing and publishing industries, rolled out its rebranding as The Printing Charity on 23 March.

The rebrand was announced at an event hosted by our President, Michael Johnson, at 11 Downing Street, by kind permission of the Rt. Hon. Alistair Darling MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer.

The new name reflects the charity’s desire to help more people who work or have worked in printing, publishing, graphic arts and the allied trades, but without losing its relevance to those in traditional printing and publishing.

Within the printing industry, the word ‘printer’ is actually very specific. We believe the word ‘printing’ in our new name is more inclusive of all the sectors we support.

The charity also has a new look. Our new logo, designed by Manor Creative, incorporates the four CMYK printing blocks. Each one represents one of our four cornerstones:

Homes – two sheltered accommodation schemes and a care home
Helps – one-off grants and regular financial assistance
Links – signposting to industry and other charities
Futures – fundraising and marketing to ensure our sustainable growth

Remaining relevant to the industry

Set up in 1827, the charity is the UK’s second-oldest occupational charity. It has an illustrious history with past presidents including Charles Dickens.

Recently, however, we had to address the year-on-year decline in the number of people we help. Our rebranding follows a review of our services and low profile within the industry.

Our financial grants are now more flexible. People who have been made redundant in the printing, publishing, graphic arts or allied trades, for example, can apply to us for a one-off grant of £250 to help them retrain.

During the severe weather in January this year, we made a one-off, winter fuel payment of £50 to people we help with regular financial assistance.

Working collaboratively

With BPIF and Unite the Union, we sponsor the annual Print Futures Awards. These cash grants of £2,500 each help people aged 16-30 train for a career in the UK printing and graphic arts industries.

We administered the Butler Tanner & Dennis Fund of £150,000 set up by the company to help alleviate the hardship caused by job losses at the former colour book printer, Butler & Tanner, in 2008. That partnership is a model that we would like to develop with other UK printing and publishing companies.

Renewing our links with Yorkshire

The charity had strong links with printers in Yorkshire through its auxiliary volunteer scheme that referred people experiencing hardship to us. The extremely active Yorkshire and Humberside auxiliary was the last to be wound up in 1995.

We are delighted a link has continued with Victor Watson CBE DL, Print Yorkshire’s current non-Executive President, who was the charity’s President in 1992.

We want to build on that link and re-engage with Yorkshire’s printing and publishing industries to help more people in the region. If you, or people you know, are experiencing hardship, call us on 01293 542 820 or see www.theprintingcharity.org.uk

Come and join The Printing Charity!
